The minimum flow Base flow required in a stream or river to meet the natural water needs for the indigenous wildlife and vegetation and to maintain the stream’s natural hydrological condition and its aesthetic value. It also assumes the water quality meets appropriate quality standards.
An alternative term is environmental flow. Many water agencies include ecological flow requirements when calculating the water volumes available for human uses.
