The term "HydroBASIN" refers to a global database of basin boundaries that was developed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and is used for hydrological modeling and analysis. The database includes over 6,000 sub-basins and 15,000 watersheds that are nested within 22 major river basins around the world. The HydroBASIN dataset is freely available for download and can be used to support a wide range of water management and conservation efforts.
Waterplan’s science analyses are based on HydroBASINS, usually Level 5, 7 and 12. The higher the number, the smaller the basin area.
Waterplan’s local data are based on river or groundwater basins defined by the local agencies from which much of the local data are obtained. These are based on local knowledge of topography and geology and do not always align with the HydroBasins.
