For a Waterplan analysis, the Site is the physical area over which the client organization owns or manages land and carries out its principal activities. In most cases it is a contiguous area of land but may also include physically separated but nearby areas (especially if in the same catchment).
For a factory, the ‘site’ is typically represented by the fenced area encompassing all buildings, parking and storage areas.
For farming, it encompasses its fields, buildings and storage areas. Where the organization operates its own water sources and/or wastewater plant, these should be considered part of the ‘site’. For example, a water supply point (eg. borehole or surface water intake) owned by a factory may be physically separate but should be considered part of the ‘site’. This does not apply to municipal water sources which are considered to belong to the supplier.
Waterplan prefers the more general term ‘site’ in place of ‘facility’ which is more specific to an operational site such as a factory. Note: some water stewardship bodies use the term ‘facility’ in place of site.
